Miguel Sopena

I became an artist after obtaining my PhD in Theoretical Physics at Sussex University in 2013. I completed a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Brighton City College and a 2-year portraiture diploma at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. I am originally from València, in Eastern Spain, but have been based in the UK since 1998. I currently live and have my studio in Croydon, South London. My interests as an artist are very diverse but at present I work primarily as an abstract painter, paying close attention to composition, colour, and the material properties of the painting medium, and exploring themes of identity, memory, and the passage of time. I create work because I see creativity as a necessity. Even when the starting point for a given work is technical or very playful the creative process is loaded with feeling. The expression of emotion is at the heart of my practice. Over the last few years I have established a solid record of promoting and exhibiting my work, including a recent solo show of abstract work at the Stone Space in East London (December 2022) which was supported by Arts Council funding.
